Text Box: Local Tax Rates
Living Here 2007-08
The Charlotte Observer

Property owners pay county taxes based on how much their property is worth, paying a set number of cents per $100 of assessed tax value.  If they live in a city or town, they also pay additional taxes there.   Depending on where a home is, taxpayers may pay additional solid waste fees, auto fees, fire taxes or municipal service district fees.
The following are the local property tax rates, followed in parentheses by the taxes for each $100,000 of property value.  But note, they do not include special taxes for fire, schools or municipal districts.  To determine your tax bill, divide the tax value of your home by 100, then multiply it by the rate.

SOUTH CAROLINA
Property taxes in South Carolina are changing this year after the state overhauled its tax system.  Homeowners will no longer have to pay for some school expenses as part of their property tax bill.  Instead, they will pay more in sales tax to cover those costs.  For some, the change will mean much lower property tax bills, while some homeowners may see no changes at all.
The tax rates under the new system had not been set as of publication time.  Contact your county tax assessor for more information.
